Activation screen shows only two radio buttons

I was emailed about this problem and the AutoCAD user found that the last solution helped in his case. If you have this problem take a look at the links below.

Register Today (Product Activation Wizard) displays only two radio buttons

When you started the product and chose the Register and Activate option, the Product Activation wizard displayed only two radio buttons that did not have any associated text descriptions. Also, there were no Next or Cancel buttons that would allow you to proceed with the activation or cancel it.

Solutions are found at TS1053941 and if it does not work try the Discussion Group advice to create another Windows user account with administrator rights.

IE7Pro Google PageRank broken and solved

Google changed the lookup URL for the PageRank value for more than a month ago and that broke the IE7Pro Alexa rank/google pagerank plugin (searchstatus) that makes it possible to see Google PageRank in the status bar of Internet Explorer. Even though the name indicates something else IE7Pro does work in IE8 and IE9 too.

Old PageRank URL:[URLHERE]
New PageRank URL:[URLHERE]
The solution it to edit …\IEPro\plugins\searchstatus\plugin.js like this and Google PageRank work again.
Old code:
queryurl = "" + mGoogleCH + "&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&features=Rank&q=" + reqgre;
New code:
queryurl = "" + mGoogleCH + "&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&features=Rank&q=" + reqgre;

The Alexa rank has since been broken and only show 0 so the plugin.js needs to be edited.
Change the regex parsing of the xml result like this:
Change from
var re = /POPULARITY.*TEXT=\"(\d+)\"\/\>/i;
var re = /POPULARITY.*TEXT=\"(\d+)\"/i;

How to disable/enable Autodesk Exchange

Do you want to enable Autodesk Exchange or learn to know how to disable Autodesk Exchange?

Upon installing and starting the AutoCAD 2012’s family of products Autodesk Exchange is automatically started. Many AutoCAD users, administrators or CAD Managers might want to avoid the dialog at start-up and will uncheck the Show this window at start up. This will also speed up start of AutoCAD.

Registry location is:
and when LaunchNFW is 1 Autodesk Exchange will auto-start. When the LaunchNFW is 3 Autodesk Exchange will not show when AutoCAD starts.

Autodesk Exchange can also be started manually by clicking on the Exchange icon in InfoCenter, pressing F1 for help or run the EXCHANGE command. This will also give access Autodesk Exchange Apps.

To disable Autodesk Exchange uncheck “Access online content (including Help) when available” in Options>System.

To disable Exchange for all users at deployment, uncheck the option "Use Online Help from Autodesk when available" in the deployment wizard. The end-user can easily enable it the Options dialog though.

Another trick to disable Autodesk Exchange is to edit this registry key where R18.2 is for the 2012 version and ACAD-A001:409 is depending on the product and language. See also AutoCAD registry details for more explanation:

And then edit the value name HelpBaseURL to anything other than the default value

When that is done Autodesk Exchange will show this:

Server Connection Unavailable

You must be connected to the Internet to access the Autodesk Exchange server.
Most problems are due to one of the following:

Your Internet connection is currently unavailable
You can display the offline Help system in your current web browser by pressing F1.

The Autodesk Server is temporarily unavailable
You can reload the current Autodesk Exchange page by clicking here to "Connect"

Your Proxy server is blocking Autodesk Exchange
Contact your network administrator.

It is also possible to block or unblock the Autodesk Exchange base url: in your proxy server. Here is what TS16732564 says:

2012: AutoCAD requests to Autodesk servers blocked by proxy servers

Applies to: AutoCAD 2012, AutoCAD Architecture 2012, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012, AutoCAD Electrical 2012, AutoCAD Map 3D 2012, AutoCAD Mechanical 2012, AutoCAD MEP 2012, AutoCAD P&ID 2012

You are using AutoCAD 2012 and notice that some requests to Autodesk servers are being denied.

AutoCAD requests to Autodesk servers can be blocked by proxy servers. The following components can be affected when proxies block requests to Autodesk servers:

  • Exchange: Access to help when user is online.
  • Sign in to Autodesk: Single sign-in to Autodesk Servers.
  • Content Explorer: Accessing SEEK from the Content Explorer AutoCAD plug-in.

If your network uses proxy servers to access the Internet, the following proxy mechanisms should be implemented to help avoid access issues for AutoCAD 2012 components:

Transparent proxies:

An intercepting proxy (also known as a forced proxy or transparent proxy) combines a proxy server with a gateway or router (commonly with NAT capabilities). Connections made by client browsers through the gateway are diverted to the proxy without client-side configuration (or, often, knowledge). Connections may also be diverted from a SOCKS server or other circuit-level proxies.

Transparent proxies will not prevent access to Autodesk Server components.

Exception Rules:

Adding an exception to the Proxy Settings to allow will bypass requests from the proxy server and will allow access to servers (after making sure your network is setup to route requests directly to the domain).

Disable Exchange App

This is a tool for CAD or IT Managers to disable the AutoCAD Exchange window to prevent users accessing the Apps tab (thereby preventing them downloading Plug-ins without permission). The tool requires Administrator privileges to run, but will disable the Exchange Window for all users on that computer.
This is a supplement to the CAD Managers Control, which provides the same functionality.
Note that this plug-in disables the entire Exchange Window. This reverts AutoCAD help to being displayed in your local browser. (download link or search for the app Disable Exchange within Autodesk Exchange)

Do you have any other trick to share?

How to check if ports used for licensing are open

Up and Ready showed a nice alternative to use telnet to test if a port is open to the license server from the client computer. Only Internet Explorer can be used for this.

Just change to use your server name and correct port.

adskflex vendor daemon port: http://your-server-name:2080

lmgrd port: http://your-server-name:27000

If it works it can look like this.

And when it does not work it can look like this. The license service is either not running or there is a firewall blocking the communication to the port.

Internet Explorer 9 RC

Today I downloaded IE9 RC and also the new Adobe Flash Player 10.2 and found that the problems with Windows Live Writer 2011 now are fixed. After some initial tests I have not run into any issues and hope it stays that way. Update: see issues found at the bottom. Not as stable as I first hoped.

I can see that the performance in the IE9 RC has been improved further than earlier beta and IE9 is much quicker than IE8.

One nice addition I like in the RC is the ability to show tabs on a separate row . Just right click on a tab.

I like the ability to close a tab with one click without having to activate it first and also the ability to drag tabs to a separate Window or to snap them using Aero Snap.

Where is the RSS icon? You need to show the Command bar. Right-click on the empty space to the right of the New Tab button or other places on the top frame.

One small annoyance is that the colors used for groups are totally random and even though a group is created from the same page over and over again there is a new color each time. I had the third tab active and opened a new tab using Ctrl click on a link and got one color (see tab 3 and 4).

I then closed this new tab and did the same thing again and got another color (yellow).

The only way I found to avoid this is to disable tab groups completely. I wish the color choice was more consistent and in the example above that the color was the same. I can also imagine others wanting to decide what colors or color scheme to use.

After some further usage I do see some performance issues when quickly navigating sites. It still is not possible to click on say 5-10 links holding down Ctrl. There is also problem when Ctrl click to open a new tab and right after that trying to click on another tab that is open.

After some more usage I have run into IE9 RC hanging completely on a few pages (here is one sample if you want to try) that works fine in other Browsers and also crashing while searching for text on a page. Quite often I also find that there are iexplorer processes that are not closed and sometimes takes a lot of CPU having to kill them via Task Manager. This still apply to the RTM version 9.0.8112.16421.

Autodesk Discussion Groups need Compatibility View enabled to be able to post even with the released version of IE9.

WebP vs JPEG vs JPEG 2000 vs JPEG XR

Image compression is on the news again and this time it is Google behind it trying to dethrone the lossy format JPEG. Google does not mention JPEG XR (aka Windows Media Photo and HD Photo and with file extension .WDP or .JXR) that is natively supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9. JPEG XR still have not gained any real usage after several years. Could it be licensing issues behind it. Let’s wait a few years and see if Google can get JPEG replaced. In near future WebP will be supported by Google’s Chrome browser and all of this .

compression vs alt

WebP is a method of lossy compression that can be used on photographic images. The degree of compression is adjustable so a user can choose the trade-off between file size and image quality. WebP typically achieves an average of 39% more compression than JPEG and JPEG 2000, without loss of image quality. Alpha channel support is planned for.

I wish that a future Windows Live Writer had a choice to optimize the image when publishing so you could chose the best format for the purpose. Something like this already exists in Microsoft Expression Web.

Another wish is that Snagit could respect the image format setting when copying directly to clipboard or the preview editor. Now all is PNG.

Below is one JPEG XR image that should be possible to view in IE9.

Update. The first image below cannot be viewed in the first public IE9 beta for some reason even though it can be seen in Windows 7. It might have to do with some that it was saved with a quite old HD Photo plugin for Paint.NET.

So I added one that works for sure in IE9 beta.

Windows Live Writer 2011 beta and IE9 beta test

With this blog post I’m trying to see if also Live Writer 2011 beta has problems with image alt and title being empty.

Writing this post made me find another issue, bug or change. Note that the sorting of the categories is case sensitive.

Update: The bug is also in Live Writer 2011 beta or I would say that the bug is in Internet Explorer beta as it breaks previously working functionality. Note the title tooltip.

And here is the HTML with title and alt added even though they should be empty.

Update: There are also other issues that can happen as seen on Aaron’s Live Writer Blog.

Internet Explorer 9 beta test drive

I have tried IE9 beta and here are some notes on my experience.

News in IE9

Updated icon as seen above.

Here is the top of the frame. Much slimmer than IE8 and there is no text or icon at the very top of frame.

The status bar at the bottom is disabled as default and to enable it right click where you see the home and favorite icons.

The back button is enlarged as it is the most used button and to get the recent pages to go back and forth right click on either arrow.

Drop down menu with tools

Address bar and search bar are consolidated into one box.

Internet Explorer 9 makes HD video smoother, colors truer, graphics clearer, and websites more responsive. New JavaScript engine.

No Windows XP support.

Evaluate how add-ons affect performance and disable them easily.

Pin a web page, by grabbing the tab in the browser and drag it down to the taskbar.

Note how the look of the top frame is changed when is pinned.

If you drag and drop to the desktop it becomes a pinned site as default with .website file extension instead of .url. To change from a Pinned Site Shortcut to an internet shortcut or the other way around just change the file extension. To create a shortcut hold down shift before dragging the favicon to the desktop or right click on the page and select Create Shortcut.

Right click on the pinned site and you see the favorites and tasks added.

Here is how it was done using some <meta> tags and JavaScript after the <head> tag.

<!--- Start IE9 Settings --> <meta name="application-name" content="JTB World" /> <meta name="msapplication-tooltip" content="JTB World software development" /> <meta name="msapplication-window" content="width=1024;height=768" /> <meta name="msapplication-task" content="name=Contact JTB World;action-uri=;icon-uri=/images/mail_32.ico" /> <meta name="msapplication-navbutton-color" content="#2B4564" /><meta name="msapplication-starturl" content="./" /> <script type='text/javascript'> try { window.external.msSiteModeCreateJumplist('JTB World Favorites'); window.external.msSiteModeAddJumpListItem ('JTB World Software' , '', ''); window.external.msSiteModeAddJumpListItem ('JTB World on Twitter' , '', ''); window.external.msSiteModeAddJumpListItem ('JTB World\'s Blog' , '', ''); } catch (ex) { } </script> <!-- End IE9 Settings -->

This also works when pinned to the start menu.

You can click here to try the API to add a website to the Start menu.

<a onclick="window.external.msAddSiteMode();" href="#">Add Website</a><br />

Jump List Commands makes it possible to customize your site to give access to commonly used destinations (nouns) and tasks (verbs) of an application or site.

Thumbnail toolbar commands allows you to interact directly with the site from thumbnail toolbar buttons, without having the browser window in the foreground.

Tabs can be dragged out to a separate window. I like that!

HTML5 support.

H.264 video support.

TIFF and JPEG XR images are supported. Example

Acid3 test is at 95/100 in the first public beta (and also in IE9 RC) compared to 20/100 in IE8.

What is Working and a Bug

Most things are working and I think the performance is much better.

The online banking sites I use works fine, PayPal and even the IE7pro plugin works. I’ve not seen any problems with AutoCAD, Revit, Visual Studio and a lot of other programs.

With Windows Live Writer I got a problem when wanting the alternate text on images to be empty. This forced this change to the tag title="title" alt="alt" making it not possible to have the alternate text cleared.

At you can download IE 9 beta and at there is a Flash Player preview release with enhanced support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 beta.

Flash Player "Square" preview takes advantage of hardware accelerated graphics in Internet Explorer 9 Beta, utilizing hardware rendering surfaces to improve graphics performance and enable seamless composition.

Windows Live Writer 14.0.8117.416

First post using Windows Live Writer 14.0.8117.416. Hope some of the bugs that annoy me are fixed. So I’ll be using this while waiting for the new big Windows Live Wave 4 release that hopefully comes soon with a new update of WLW.

Windows Live Writer 14.0.8117.416

“New version of Wave 3 Windows Live Writer. No new features but higher quality. Upgrade today!” – WLWriter on Twitter May 12th

For solutions and forums see the Live Writer Portal. Only problem I found was that I got it in Swedish when I wanted it in English. But that was solved by changing the order in Language Preferences in Internet Explorer > Internet Options > Language Preference.

Internet Options > Language Preference

Internet Explorer 9 and CAD

Ted Johnson, the founder of Visio is Product Manager Architect for graphics and rendering on IE. HTML5 applications that IE 9 will support are a lot richer and demanding, in terms of graphics and speed than Ajax applications. Will IE 9 be better for CAD in the cloud solutions?

Accelerators for Windows Live Writer plug-in

You know the accelerator functionality added to Internet Explorer 8. There is an Accelerator Platform for Windows 7 with a whitepaper on the Platform, and documentation on all the interfaces and methods.

This means you can add accelerator functionality into Word, Excel, Windows Live Writer or any other application. How about a built in translator for AutoCAD or Revit? This would be a cool thing to spice them up with when using Windows 7. Adding search functionality, look up a definition, terminology and so on.

How to be logged in on multiple accounts in Internet Explorer at the same time

This is one of my favorite features in Internet Explorer 8.

Click on Alt on the keyboard so the Menu shows up and click on File and New Session.

For a keyboard junky you can use Alt+F followed by “i” followed by Enter.

Now you can log into multiple Hotmail, Google, Gmail, Twitter, Yahoo or whatever account simultaneously. If it does not work you might need to deselect “Remember Me” option for the login as it might use a persistent cookie that is shared across sessions.

If you want to create a shortcut for this you can use iexplore.exe with the -nomerge parameter. "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nomerge
