AutoCAD for Mac 2015 and AutoCAD LT for Mac 2015

AutoCAD for Mac 2015 is here and is catching up with AutoCAD for Windows.

Key new enhancements include:

  • Dynamic Blocks. Mac users gain the ability to create and edit Dynamic Blocks—a capability previously limited to Windows users. This feature enables them to insert one block that can change shape, size, or configuration instead of inserting several static blocks.
  • Layer States. Mac users can also now save their layer settings as Layer States, which store information like color, linetype, and information about whether a layer is turned off, frozen, or locked. Prior to the 2015 releases, Mac users were unable to view any of the layer states information their Windows colleagues had embedded within a drawing.
  • Data Linking. Users who need to link a table to data in a Microsoft Excel file can use the new Data Linking feature, and their table will automatically update as external changes are made. This feature is especially helpful when managing large amounts of information about things like materials or fixtures.
  • Quick Select. The Quick Select tool allows users to quickly select objects based on query criteria, enabling users to easily select exactly what they need in their drawing. The Quick Select tool also includes a “preview” option so that users can see what they’re about to select before they commit to the selection.

How to write AutoLISP that works on both Windows and Mac

If you want to write AutoLISP code that works for both AutoCAD on Windows and AutoCAD for Mac remember that there is no support for DCL or COM interfaces such as VLA or VLAX (Visual LISP).

There are 4 new AutoLISP functions in AutoCAD 2012 that can help as long as you don’t need backward compatibility:

  • dumpallproperties - Outputs all the properties and their current value for the specified entity.
  • getpropertyvalue - Returns the current value of the specified property for an entity.
  • ispropertyreadonly - Returns T or nil of the specified property for an entity is read-only or not.
  • setpropertyvalue - Sets the specified property to a new value for an entity.

The following example demonstrates how to get the current radius value of a circle.
Command: (command "_circle" "2,2" 2)
nil
Command: (getpropertyvalue (entlast) "radius")
2.0

The following example demonstrates how to change the radius of a circle.
Command: (command "_circle" "2,2" 2)
nil
Command: (setpropertyvalue (entlast) "radius" 3)

For more see Hyperpics and Accessing Information About Layers in a Drawing with GETPROPERTYVALUE.

AutoCAD 2012 for Mac Licensing and Programming

AutoCAD 2012 for Mac software includes product activation in the authorization process. The process verifies that the serial number is valid and that the software has been activated only on eligible computers. The product activation technology allows an employee to install the software on a second computer owned by the employee’s company, provided it is for use away from the employee’s usual work location, the software is used only by that employee and no other, and only one of the two copies of the software is ever in use at any one time.

AutoCAD 2012 for Mac can be run via a network license. You can run “mixed networks”, with both AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD 2012 for Mac products sharing licenses. Flexera’s FlexNet manager is the licensing system used.

Customers with licenses of AutoCAD 2012 can now activate AutoCAD 2012 for Mac with the same license number and activation code. Customers with licenses of Design Suites that contain AutoCAD 2012 can also activate AutoCAD 2012 for Mac with the same license number and activation code.

Most LISP routines that work in AutoCAD 2012 will run without modification in AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. LISP routines that are dependent upon DCL or COM interfaces such as VLA or VLAX are not supported in AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. Existing ObjectARX applications will require some effort on the behalf of the developer to work in AutoCAD for Mac. At a minimum, ObjectARX applications need to be recompiled for Mac OS X. The API (application programming interface) libraries used by those applications, and the availability of those libraries on Mac OS X, will give some indication of the modification necessary for the application to work in AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. For example, the ObjectARX sample applications compile without modification. Conversely, an application making multiple win32 system calls will need to be modified.

AutoCAD 2012 customizations cannot be directly migrated to AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. However, AutoCAD 2012 for Mac uses a subset of the AutoCAD 2012 cui/cuix XML schema to define the user interface. The values are interpreted slightly differently (for example, ribbon panels become workflow groups) but they are very similar. AutoCAD 2012 for Mac supports Menu and Workflow customization; however, constructs like Profiles and Workspaces are not supported in AutoCAD 2012 for Mac.

AutoCAD LT 2012 for Mac and AutoCAD 2012 for Mac

Network licenses can be reported on with JTB FlexReport.

AutoCAD LT 2012 for Mac and AutoCAD 2012 for Mac

AutoCAD for Mac OS X

Once upon a time AutoCAD could run on Mac and during the fall 2010 it is time for it again. It has been possible to run AutoCAD on Mac for some time but now AutoCAD for Mac is a native Mac application. Thinking about it last time I had a Mac from Apple was around 20 years ago and I was developing applications for it too.

AutoCAD for Mac is a 2D and 3D product and use the same native DWG format as AutoCAD for Windows. LISP and Scripts are also supported even though some AutoLISP features will not work as they are Windows specific. Even the command line is still there as well as most other familiar AutoCAD features.

“The AutoCAD for Mac was a complete re-write and not a simple port or a LT version.” – Between the Lines

“AutoCAD for Mac has an intuitive interface that will be familiar to Mac users and makes available many of the powerful AutoCAD features and functionality to customers who choose to work natively on the Mac. AutoCAD for Mac takes full advantage of Mac OS X, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of Multi-Touch gestures on Mac notebooks, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad for intuitive pan and zoom features. User experience design patterns, such as the visual approach to drawing and layout management, have also been incorporated into AutoCAD for Mac.”

“With support for native creation and editing files in the DWG file format, AutoCAD for Mac also offers easy collaboration with suppliers, customers, clients and partners regardless of platform. Files created in previous versions of AutoCAD will open seamlessly in AutoCAD for Mac, boosting productivity by reducing time-consuming file translation and cleanup of converted data. The value of AutoCAD for Mac is further extended with an extensive API (application programming interface) and flexible customization options that allow for tailor-built workflows, simple application development and adaption, custom configurations for settings and screen real estate options to suit individual workflows and project demands.” - Press release

A subset of ObjectARX and AutoLISP (not COM related stuff) will be available to developers and customers working on AutoCAD for Mac. Notable omissions include layer states, layer filters, the Sheet Set Manager and DWF/DGN/PDF underlay support.

AutoCAD for iPad, iPod and iPhone - AutoCAD WS

Project Butterfly Autodesk’s CAD in the cloud has been around for some time and this fall it’s time for Project Butterfly as a web and mobile application that will be called AutoCAD WS.

“Autodesk also announced the AutoCAD WS mobile application, a new free* app soon to be available through Apple’s App Store that will extend AutoCAD to Apple’s iOS. The AutoCAD WS mobile application will enable AutoCAD users to edit and share AutoCAD files on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch so they can have real-time collaboration even while on the go.

AutoCAD for Mac will also be offered free* to students and educators through the Autodesk Education Community, where more than 25 Autodesk software products are available for download to inspire learning and help prepare students for successful careers. Autodesk recognizes the popularity of the Mac platform among students and is providing AutoCAD for Mac so they can build needed skills by having access to the same software that design professionals use every day.” - Press release

“WS in AutoCAD WS doesn’t stand for anything.. sorta like the XP in Windows… it’s a designation that it is a web enabled product.”

For some technical details on AutoCAD WS see this interview with the Senior Software Development Manager for AutoCAD WS: “So by the time Steve Jobs’ open letter to Adobe with his thoughts on Flash hit the news, we were already well into our porting efforts to create a C++ kernel for Project Butterfly that could be used to build a native iOS application.”

AutoCAD on Leopard Mac?

Q. Is there AutoCAD for Mac?
A. Not really.

Q. Can I run AutoCAD on a Mac?
A. Yes.

Mac OS X Leopard Boot CampAutoCAD can't run on Mac OS like the latest Mac Leopard OS X but with the help of the latest Mac OSX that can run on Intel processors and use Boot Camp it's possible. Leopard includes Bootcamp and that way you can run AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, Inventor or other "heavy" Windows applications on your Mac. But still you need to have Windows OS like Windows Vista or Windows XP.

AutoCAD for Mac have existed but is a bit of the history. It was AutoCAD R11 and AutoCAD R12 that was also released for Mac.
