AutoCAD layer drop-down has stopped working - solution

Here’s a question about the layer drop-down in AutoCAD I got that I think others also can run into so I wanted to share the solution.

We are having an issue with the Layer drop-down menu on one of our AutoCAD stations.

When we select a line that was drawn on layer "A-Line" the drop down menu does not update to shown which layer the line is on.

If I select a layer from the drop down menu and draw a new line on layer "B-Line" and then select any other line in the drawing it appears to be on layer "B-Line" because the Layer menu does not seem to be updating.

Do you know what the problem may be? Since this is only a problem on one persons computer, is there a setting that may have accidentally been turned off?

The solution is to set PICKFIRST to 1 (just enter PICKFIRST on the command line). PICKFIRST controls whether you select objects before (noun-verb selection) or after you issue a command.
